Stainless Steel Alloys: Properties, Uses, and More
Traditional steel is made from iron and carbon. It becomes classified as stainless steel when alloyed with chromium and carbon, and depending on type may be further optimized with additional alloying materials such as nickel, titanium, or molybdenum.
The process of making stainless steel alloys is largely focused on the strategic applications of heat and cooling methods. The finished product is both durable and versatile, though may be susceptible to denting and scratching. One way stainless steel achieves its properties through a precipitation-hardening, in which stainless steel undergoes high-temperature heat treatment, rapid cooling, and subsequent aging at a lower temperature. This technique imparts a balance of corrosion resistance and high strength, ideal for applications needing mechanical performance and environmental resistance. To enhance pliability and resistance to scratches and dents, stainless steel undergoes tempering after the hardening process. This tempered stainless steel finds applications in various fields including industry, music instruments, automotive, aerospace, and more.
Aside from being one of the most environmentally-friendly steel products, stainless steel offers several key qualities that make it ideal for use in high-heat and high-friction environments, including exceptional ductility, hardness, elasticity, and corrosion-resistance. Stainless steel alloys are particularly well-suited to meeting complex structural requirements, since it can be formed into many different shapes and modes and stand up to heavy impact. It is used in everything from ballistics to surgical implants, and is also a common component of everyday household items.
When choosing a stainless steel alloy, it is important to consider the product type, which is determined by its alloying materials. As your stainless steel supplier, we offer a variety of stainless steels that can be optimized to meet your needs, including 17-4PH stainless steel, 15-5PH stainless steel, and 13-8MO stainless steel.
