15-5 PH
Material Data Sheet
15-5 PH stainless steel is a martensitic precipitation hardening type stainless steel. It possesses all the advantages of 17-4 PH, including single low-temperature thermal treatment. It also offers excellent transverse notch toughness/ductility and very good uniformity of properties. The mechanical properties in larger sections and forgeability are superior to that of 17-4 PH. Also known as XM-12 or UNS S15500, 15-5PH was a modification of 17-4 PH, which was developed in the 1960s. It has a more refined microstructure obtained through the re-melting process. This refined structure improves the toughness of the material, which is achieved by reduced delta ferrite content and control of inclusion size and shape.
15-5 PH also has low-temperature hardening, good fabrication properties, and excellent corrosion resistance, which makes it suitable for many industries. The strength and ductility of UNS S15500 can be enhanced through heat treating the material at different temperatures and it can be machined in either the solution-annealed state or in the final heat-treated condition:
