A-286 alloy (S66286) is an iron-based superalloy useful for applications requiring high strength and corrosion resistance up to 1300°F (704°C) and for lower stress applications at higher temperatures A-286 alloy is heat and corrosion resistant and can be age-hardened to a high strength level. The alloy is also used for low-temperature applications requiring a ductile, non-magnetic high strength material at temperatures ranging from above room temperature down to at least -320°F (-196°C). The alloy may be used for moderate corrosion applications in aqueous solutions. Aqueous corrosion resistance of A-286 is comparable to 316/316L stainless grade. Up to 1800 °F (982 °C), the oxidation resistance of alloy A-286 is equivalent to that of Type 310 stainless.

Used for reasonably low cost when moderate strength and oxidation resistance are required at temperatures greater than suitable for stainless steels. This alloy finds application in gas turbine forgings.

Machinability & Welding

As with all nickel-containing alloy, cleanliness of the area to be welded is of paramount importance. Welding procedures and processes are the same as used for stainless steel. Preheating or post welding heat treatment is not required. A-286 can be readily machined by standard methods and is similar in behavior to the machining of the austenitic (300 series) stainless steels. Cemented carbide tools are best for high cutting rates, as in turning operations.
