Getting Tough on Titanium

titanium-chemical-element

Titanium is pound-for-pound the strongest metal found on Earth, so it’s easy to see why it is the namesake of the legendary-scaled Titans of Greek mythology. Titanium is seen as “the incarnation of natural strength.” We’ve rounded up some interesting facts on Titanium that you may not know!

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
Titanium is the metal of choice in the biomedical field. Dental implants made of titanium were first introduced in the 1950’s as Titanium’s strong but lightweight qualities made it a perfect fit for dentists. Soon, Titanium became the perfect component from everything from heart valves, to prosthetics, to even toe implants! Titanium’s biocompatibility characteristics include resistance to corrosion from bodily fluids, as well as being non-magnetic and non-toxic. Titanium also can cause the body to naturally ossointegrate, meaning your bone can grow directly on the titanium surface, in turn strengthening the implant— giving you the strength of a Titan (well, kind of!)

Soak Up the Sun (Safely)
Believe it or not, Titanium is in sunscreen. Titanium dioxide (powder) is used in sunscreen to help protect the skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. The naturally occurring mineral creates a barrier on the skin, causing radiation to simply bounce off!

Up, Down, All-Around
Because of Titanium’s ideal resistance to corrosion, it’s easy to see why it’s become a favorite within the aerospace industry, as well as marine components (saltwater is highly corrosive). Almost all ships propellers are made from Titanium to prevent corrosion.

Let’s Add Some Dimension!
Titanium is the strongest metal that can be used in additive manufacturing—or in simple terms, 3D printing! Because of titanium’s incredibly high strength but low weight, it’s the most ideal metal to use for 3D printing. Current metal 3D printing technology allows titanium parts to be printed down to 0.25 mm layers with a minimum wall thickness as small as 0.4 mm. The use of titanium in 3D printing has benefits that exceed fabricators wildest dreams. Additive manufacturing allows titanium to be printed into shapes that were previously impossible with traditional manufacturing, and offers industrial designers endless possibilities which are less restrictive, and offers that ability to create prototypes quickly and at a much lower cost.
